bah bindweed
I decided to empty my compost bin today.
Yep.. one of those pain in the ar** plastic darliks, easy to fill, not so easy to empty. The base is supposed to lift off but this one wouldn’t budge, so three of us had to resort to brute force. After a lot of huffing puffing and swearing we managed to lever the fork underneath and then tip it over onto its side so i could fork it out from the bottom… When i placed the bin there i had lifted the grass and put the plastic base down so the last thing i was expecting to see was long white roots. My heart sank. I couldn’t believe it, i called over my lottie neighbour in the hope i was wrong. Nope… It was bindweed. After months of digging over the front of the plot i had not come across any but this strip near the path, around 2ft wide by 6ft long was the last bit to dig over as i needed to move the darlik. Sods law, that’s where i put it..
So now, i have to sieve through my lovely compost to get the roots out.. Grrrrr I’m surprised it hasn’t taken over the plot. Er i didn’t say that, i don’t want to tempt fate … “sigh”

Oh no! I’m hoping it didn’t take you too long! How much compost do you make with that and how often? Can you tell I’m thinking about getting one like it?

The bin is a 220 ltr.. I started my bin a year ago and thought it would be ok at the side near the path until i cleared my plot ..How wrong was i. Of all the spots i could have chosen i had to put it where there was bindweed,
I didnt notice any when i lifted the grass and its the only spot that has any

I moved house once because of bindweed - well not quite but I felt like it.
Now I think it is one of the challenges that life has for me and I take perverse pleasure in tracking down bindweed roots.
Hope you can clear it soon

Those bloody bins are useless! I have one in my garden and I curse the day I acquired it.

I regret buying mine.I have two that i got cheap from the council - 6 quid each They really are a right pain to empty The little door at the bottom is bloody useless Im thinking of using mine for manure in future - should make emptying easier and making a compost box from pallets.

Pah! Bloody bindweed!
I cleared 13 barrows full of bindweed roots from the bank at the back of my plot and now spend my time digging out new bindweed shoots that pop up endlessly, garnering life from just the tiniest piece of root left in the ground. It’s a BORE and a half!!!
Am off to plant some tomatoes today. Maybe a little early but I’ll take my chances…..
