burn slash burn

Well… all the plans i had over the crimbo holidays came to nowt.

I didn’t manage to get down the lottie once to make a serious dent in the cutting down at the back of my plot. Mainly, the weather was the culprit as it rained for most of the week..

So this weekend saw the start of the three c`s (cut clear cover)

I hadn’t realised just how much the previous tenant liked their fruit until now. I have come across quite a few fruit bushes in the middle of the plot. I knew there were a couple gooseberries up by the plum trees.. i came across those when i cut a little path through in the summer. Also down one side at the back there’s blackberries that’s completely out of control and has crept into the middle. Basically, a total mess but as I’m cutting i can see how it once was and now I’m reluctant to clear it all and start from scratch.I had planned on clearing everything apart from the plum trees at the back (that bit would Have been a wildlife area)  Now..I have hard pruned all the fruit bushes iv come across and cut down all the crap (weeds ect) with the intention of digging the perennials up before things start to spring to life. Iv still got to clear the plum tree seedling that are at the back  (I’m thinking plant flowers there.) there’s also room for a couple of smallish raised beds if i knock together some wood.

I hope this works. Im not expecting much from the fruit bushes this year after the pruning i gave them, if it does go to plan and i can see a return from all that pruning then the raspberries i have planted on my front plot will be moving home later this year along with my strawberries that i have only just planted…

The start of the clearing

Hi Dee, I’m Dee too, and I live in Oklahoma, USA. I found your blog thru Green Thumb Sunday. Living in the states, I don’t really understand allotment gardening. I assume you get a space and then you use it and take care of it. How large is it? What are the requirements? Do you have to keep it a certain way?
