chitting

Note to oneself: Slap great big sign near chitting potatoes, so daughter does not attempt to peel them…

She strolled into the kitchen with a bag of my seed potatoes. Her plan ? was to make some chips - yep.. she was going to peel and chop up my spuds! Well.. i picked myself up from the floor through laughing so much and thought it would be best to start to chit them properly in a shallow box to avoid anymore confusion… They are sitting on top of my bookcase in my bedroom at the moment, hopefully out of harms way.

Last year (my first year) i made a bit of a boob and chitted them in a large box that was too dark.. I ended up with a box full of stringy roots, a complete tangled mess, with me gingerly trying to separate them without damaging the roots (most fell off) I know most gardeners remove all but a few shoots. So..tell me please, to chit or not to chit; that is the question! I’m not sure its that important to chit anyway..

This year I’m growing Desiree main crop

Along with Maris peer second crop..

I had planned not to bother growing  early potatoes this year as i wasn’t sure i would have the space with everything else but now have changed my mind. Ill fit them in somehow even if i grow them in sacks.. Ill pop back to B&Q this weekend and pick up some Charlotte’s…

Easter is early this year and I’m not sure if i will go down the traditional route and plant my spuds on good Friday. Last year the weather was fabulous over the Easter break. I was digging in my shorts and t-shirt; not a pretty sight at my age! So, we`ll just have to wait and see what the weather brings..

Before now, I’ve never heard of chitting. Found you on Blotanical. I do so love potatoes grown in the garden. Potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, squash all taste so much better. Over time, my garden has been less and less about food, but not this year. I’m growing more food.~~Dee

I am trying to understand what chitting is?? I have never heard this term. I don’t know much about vegetable gardening though. I look forward to finding out if I’m a chitter or not? lol Please forward chitting info to me. Maybe I’m missing out.
