July on the Allotment

Where has the time gone ?

Just a quick update of progress at the lottie…

My Peas have finished now and sitting in their place are some Lettuce lollo, Radish and Spring onions. I have pulled up my 0nions and Shallots [a little early and some are a tad small but that's ok] needed space for 3 rows of Autumn king carrots.

Courgettes are going crazy - the first 2 fruits were stolen, bar&^*^%$. The whopper in the photo will feed us for a week - Ha

Dug up a row of my Maris peer potatoes, 4 more to go..

I’m trying some florence fennel this year too - The packet suggest to sow now [end of Jul/Aug] to avoid bolting, so, fingers crossed they will make it..

Toms are getting big and look healthy now the sun has made an appearance.

Peppers are starting to fruit, they are earlier this year, no show with the aubergines yet. Almost forgot,  sown some boltardy beetroot..

Brassicas are getting big  - need to do a photo update on those … Phew, she takes deep breath..

Have a good weekend

How mean of someone to nick your courgettes - especially the first ones.
    Does this happen often?
Your plot is very productive - I will be interested in how you get on with the Florence Fennel - I am never sure if I like it or not.
    Regards

How are you going to force your fennel? We just planted out some seedlings on the same anti-bolting basis, but I hadn’t thought about forcing it … care to share some wisdom?

Ill not be forcing my florence fennel - iv direct sown some, as suggested by a few people and the seed packet [mid summer] i have been told that Aug is the best time, so i may pop a few more seeds in soon and keep everything crossed. The site i got the seeds from said they could stand until christmas if kept covered. This is my first time trying these, only time will tell, could be a complete disaster !

Hi Karen. We do get the odd thing go missing on the site. This is the first time mine has been nicked, apart from some woodash that went missing out of my drum after a day of burning. Iv got a pretty good idea whos doing it [inside job] cant prove it though..

Yes! you have to keep on top of picking the courgettes or they turn into whoppers overnight. I agree with what you said about the tomatoes, hot sunshine definitely ripens them quicker. These past few cloudy days have really slowed the ripening.
