scarlet with white eyes
Thought i would try something different this year!
So..After a couple of hours looking at heirloom sites i ordered these from the Real Seed Catalogue..
Oca - Oxalis Tuberosum
Scarlet with white eyes…
“One of the lost crops of the incas”
The growing instructions that came with them seem pretty clear. You grow them like you would potatoes, planting in spring and basically they look after themselves, you just need to earth them up and weed. They do stay in the ground for a while though. The instructions state that they don’t start to grow until the days shorten, often as late as November. Then you have to wait 2/3 weeks after the leaves have died down before digging up. “And there’s more”! They suggest that you leave them on a sunny windowsill to sweeten for 10 days as they are a little sharp when first dug up So.. I estimate around January before i can serve them up. Hope their worth it.! I can save some of the tubers and do it all over again…Whoopee, she says sarcastically…..

I always like trying out new things and that sounds very interesting! I’m really looking forward to read how you get on with those and might give them a try next year …
I’ve ordered some blue potatoes this year as well, can’t wait to receive them!

These look interesting, shame you have to wait so long to find out what they are like.
