tomato woes
I have dug up all my tomato plants this weekend because they have blight, or so i have been told by other plot holders? I’m not convinced.
I think its quite easy to shout blight, yes the stems had black patches on them along with the fruit. But… The jury is still out after I googled some images of the symptoms, my toms just didn’t look like the pics. (The leaves were still fine none had gone brown). So.. after some more googling, I learned you can get early and late blight and here in the UK there are two strains of blight one of which is very rare ” I’m not that unlucky am I.”
Its been a bad year at the plot for toms, a few holders have lost theirs, not all though and i have had comments like. You cant plant any toms, potatoes or onions there for eight years “ah”
You need to put jeyes fluid on the soil to disinfect “Not bloody likely”
And a comment i came across on a gardening forum from a grower of forty years who says it just a fungal infection from the lousy summer we have had and yes blight develops from wet humid conditions but looking at photos members had posted he said it wasn’t blight (my toms looked like theirs)
I would think that after forty years of growing he has come across blight, so would instantly recognize the symptoms
I was so looking forward to them. Oh well theres always next year
********
Hmm I’m still not convinced it was blight…

It probably IS blight, I’m afraid. But ignore all that nonsense about ‘not planting for eight years’. It’s bollocks (am I allowed to use that word??!). Blight spores are kicking around all the time, anyway. They only turn into blight on spuds and toms when the conditions are right… which they have been, in spades, this year. Last year I saw no blight at all on anything because of that fearfully dry summer. Who knows what next year brings??

I got rid of my last tomato plant this past weekend. Funny, really, as the tomatoes were the first thing I planted. At the time, I was told I’ll be looking for ways of using them up. Didn’t happen. Here’s to next year’s tomatoes!
Ps: Jeyes on the ground to disinfect? Do people do that? Are people doing that?

Well.. he does. when i was pulling up my toms he came over and suggested i use jeyes to disinfect the soil were they had been. I was totally gobsmacked, started nodding like the dog from direct line. He`s a lovely man but has some strange ideas….
