use of fertilisers
N-K-P figures are percentages of nitrogen, phosphates and potash.
Nitrogen promotes foliage growth and is particularly needed for grass and leafy vegetables.
Phosphates promote root development and are needed for young plants root vegetables, fruit and seed crops.
Potash promotes flower and friut growth and is also needed for potatoes…
Signs of shortage..
Nitrogen..
Stunted growth: small pale green leaves week stems.
Phosphates:
Stunted roots and stems, small leaves with a purplish tinge, low fruit yield.
Potash.
Edges of leaves turn yellow then brown, low fruit yield, fruit and flowers poorly coloured with low disease resistance..
Growmore..
Provides balanced nutrients for strong and healthy growth, improves vegetable cropping levels [N-P-K : 7-7-7-] use early spring to October.
Bone meal..
Organic, fine ground fertiliser that slowly releases organic nitrogen and phosphate into the soil. This encourages strong and healthy root growth. Bone meal can be used anywhere in the garden as a base dressing or a top dressing [N-P-K:3.5-18-5] use mainly in the Autumn and Spring..
Hoof and horn..
A concentrated organic nitrogen only fertiliser, good for leafy vegetables and foliage plants, it acts quickly in warm soil and is long lasting [N-P-K:12-0-0] use in Spring and Autumn..
Fish blood bone..
Organic based fine ground fertiliser, containing bone meal, dried blood and fish meal that’s enriched with potash and other plant food. A balanced feed encouraging strong root and top growth. Use anywhere in the garden from March till October. [N-P-K: 6-6-6]
Garden lime..
Improves structure and drainage of heavy soil and also the speed and degree of decomposition in compost heaps
Good for many vegetables including-brassicas beans carrots lettuce and parsnips, as it supplies calcium.Well limed soil is less likely to carry club-root disease. use all year round particularly in winter
Nitrate of chalk..
Quick acting, growth promoting nitrogen fertiliser in granular form. Contains some lime-good for brassicas and root vegetables. Avoid acid loving plants.Use April to September {N-P-K: 27-0-0]
Super phosphate
Helps root development and quick establishment of young or recently moved plants. Use all year round [N-P-K: 0-18-0]
Sulphate of ammonia
Quick acting growth promoting fertiliser that gives rapid boost to established vegetables and salad crops. Use as a spring tonic for shrubs, fruit and spring greens. Use April till September [N-P-K: 20-0-0]
Sulphate of potash…
The best source of potash for most plants which is often deficient in sandy soil. Particularly needed by flowers potatoes beans tomatoes currents and gooseberries.Acts quickly. To correct potash deficiency dissolve 1 oz in a gallon of water and wet the soil thoroughly.Use in the spring [N-P-K-: 0-0-48]
Chilean of potash
A useful 2 in 1 fertiliser supplying nitrogen as well as potash to early spring crops that would make too much soft growth if given nitrogen only. Apply direct to soil or mix 1 teaspoon to 1 gallon of water and use two or three times during the growing season.Use spring or early summer. [N-P-K : 15-0-10]
John innes..
base balanced fertiliser, used mainly as a base dressing before sowing/planting because the nitrogen is slow released. Use spring autumn.{N-P-K :7-5-10]
